AUSTIN, Texas – South Carolina swimmer Marwan El Kamash opened up his week at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships today as he placed 22nd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

In his first-ever event at the NCAA Championships as an individual, the sophomore clocked a time of 4:18.25 in heat No. 5 as he finished sixth. As the seventh and final heat concluded, El Kamash landed in 22nd place, which was 1.48 seconds outside of the final qualifying spot.

The day was not done there for the Gamecocks as the 400 medley relay team was the last of the group to compete in the prelims. Swimming out of the first heat, the team of Jay Warner, Kevin Leithold, Michael Flach and Gerard Rodriguez finished 24th overall with a time of 3:13.69.

Tomorrow’s events for the Gamecocks will include El Kamash competing in the 200 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay team. Prelims begin at 12 p.m. ET, with finals starting at 8 p.m. ET.
