Ashlyn Masters Takes SEC Player of the Week Award

March 31, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In helping South Carolina go 5-0 over the past week, senior right fielder Ashlyn Masters won the SEC Player of the Week award, the league office announced this morning.

The Evans, Ga., native hit .643 on the week and accounted for 12 of the Gamecocks’ runs, hitting four doubles and a home run to help her score seven runs and drive in six. The four doubles helped her make it a three-way tie for 12th in South Carolina single-season history with 20 regular-season games to go in 2014.

After spending much of the year practicing at second base, Masters has moved to right field and had a huge outfield assist to cut down a Rebel runner at the plate in the Gamecocks’ 7-6 win on Sunday, taking the series sweep, the first for South Carolina in SEC play this year.

Masters is riding a 13-game hitting streak and has moved into the top 15 of the SEC statistical rankings in seven categories thanks to the stretch. She leads the Gamecocks in eight offensive categories as well.

Tennessee took the other two awards, with Ellen Renfroe earning the Pitcher of the Week nod and Annie Aldrete taking the Freshman of the Week honor.

Masters is the first Gamecock to win the SEC Player of the Week award since 2005 when Jessica Josker and Meghan Cornett won it in consecutive weeks.

South Carolina closes its seven-game home stand with a split doubleheader on Tuesday, opening with Charleston Southern at 4:30 p.m. and finishing with Presbyterian at 7 p.m. at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
