May 19, 2014
University of South Carolina center Cody Waldrop is one of 64 players named to the Rimington Trophy spring watch list, it was announced today. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in Division I-A College Football.
Waldrop, a 6-2, 309-pound sophomore from Seffner, Fla., is slated to be the Gamecocks’ starting center in 2014. As a redshirt freshman in 2013, Waldrop started six games while battling injuries for much of the season. A member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, Waldrop was recognized during the 2013 spring game as the Most Improved Freshman on the offensive side of the ball.
Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy’s only double winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.
The Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.5 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The 14-year old award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $100 million for CF Research.
