COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior guard A.J. Cann and junior tailback Mike Davis received Preseason All-America accolades from Athlon Sports. Cann is a preseason first-team honoree with Davis a preseason third-team selection. South Carolina opens the 2014 season on Thursday, Aug. 28 hosting Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Cann, a 6-4, 311-pound offensive guard from Bamberg, S.C., was named to Steele’s first-team All-America and first-team All-SEC squads. A team captain and leader of the offensive line, Cann owns a team-high 38 starts over the past three seasons.
Davis, a 5-9, 223-pound junior from Atlanta, earned a spot on Steele’s third-team All-America squad and was a second-team All-SEC selection. He was a second-team All-SEC pick last season after rushing 203 times for 1,183 yards (the fourth-highest single-season total in school history), with 11 touchdowns.
Two weeks ago Athlon’s released the Preseason All-SEC teams with six Gamecocks honored. Cann was a first-team pick with Davis a second-team choice, senior offensive tackle Corey Robinson a third-team selection and junior wide receiver Shaq Roland receiving fourth-team recognition. On defense, sophomore linebacker Skai Moore earned preseason second-team all-conference honors with sophomore placekicker Elliott Fry a third-team specialist.
