GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Athletics Department has announced the receipt of a gift presented to the Garnet Way Campaign, establishing an endowed football scholarship honoring former Gamecock running back Marcus Lattimore.

The endowment will provide a scholarship each year, given by the David Glenn Family from Greenville, S.C., and will be awarded each year to a deserving football walk-on student-athlete. Like Lattimore, the recipients shall be of the highest character and integrity while exhibiting exemplary leadership skills.

“Marcus has been an inspiration to many, including our family,” said David Glenn. “It is our pleasure to give this gift to the athletics’ program in his honor.”

After a stellar high school career at Byrnes High School in Spartanburg, S.C., Lattimore donned the Gamecocks’ Garnet and Black for the first time in 2010. His unmatched work ethic and demeanor on and off the field quickly made him a favorite among the Gamecock faithful and earned the respect of millions across the country.

As a true freshman, he electrified South Carolina, the SEC and the nation, earning second-team All-America honors while being a unanimous National Freshman of the Year and first-team All-SEC performer after gaining 1,197 yards with 17 rushing touchdowns.

A preseason Heisman Trophy candidate as a sophomore, Lattimore saw his season end prematurely when he suffered a knee injury in a win at Mississippi State. Despite playing in just seven games that season, he was still recognized as a second-team All-SEC pick.

After an intensive year-long rehabilitation, Lattimore returned for his junior campaign in 2012. For the third-straight year he led the Gamecocks in rushing, but for the second-straight year his season ended abruptly as he suffered a severe knee injury in the win over Tennessee. The scene that unfolded on that October Saturday created an unprecedented outpouring of support that stretched from coast to coast.

In less than three full seasons, Lattimore finished his career ranked sixth in school history with 2,677 rushing yards, fourth with 555 rushing attempts, first in both rushing (38) and total (41) touchdowns, third in points scored (246) and tied for second with 11 career 100-yard rushing games. He was also recognized as the Dr. Harris Pastides Scholar-Athlete at the 2012 Garnet & Black Spring Game. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

“We are thankful for the Glenn Family’s commitment to our University and football program,” said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. “Marcus is a great Gamecock and this scholarship is a terrific way to recognize his legacy at South Carolina.”

Since the summer of 2006, South Carolina Athletics has raised over $200 million through The Garnet Way Campaign.
