COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina outfielder Gene Cone and infielder Jordan Gore will play for the 2014 Petit Cup Championship in the Coastal Plain League as members of the Florence RedWolves vs. the Peninsula Pilots. The two rising sophomores begin a three-game playoff set on Friday, Aug. 14 at Florence with game two on Saturday at Peninsula and an if necessary game slated for Sunday, Aug. 16.
Cone was one of the top hitters in the CPL this summer and has continued swinging the hot bat with a .417 average (10-for-24) in the playoffs as well as five runs scored. Cone walked and scored the game-winning run on Tuesday in a 1-0 victory vs. Gastonia that lifted the RedWolves into the championship series.
Cone hit .385 (62-for-161) during the regular season in 43 starts with 18 doubles, a pair of triples, 25 RBI and 40 runs scored. He collected a .468 on-base percentage with 26 walks to 17 strikeouts. Gore started 41 games and hit .262 (37-for-141) with 17 runs and 22 RBI. Both players also were selected to the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game.
