The South Carolina Gamecock football team practiced under the lights at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” on Tuesday night. The squad continues its preparations for the 2014 season opener, set for Thursday, August 28, against Texas A&M.

Following practice, Athletics Director Ray Tanner, head coach Steve Spurrier and the entire Gamecock football coaching staff, took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

“I had two teammates with the 49ers that had ALS,” said Coach Spurrier. “It’s a terrible disease. Whatever we can do to help raise some money to fight it, we’re going to try to do our part here. I’m going to challenge three coaching buddies of mine to do their entire staff also – Nick Saban at Alabama and their staff, Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M and Bobby Stoops at Oklahoma. They need to dunk their staffs to help fight ALS.”

“I think it’s important that your coach cares about stuff bigger than football,” said senior quarterback Dylan Thompson. “A lot of people being affected by this, it means a lot to them seeing it, seeing the support. For the whole staff and team to be involved, I thought it was cool.”

The Gamecocks are scheduled to practice again on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. That practice is closed. The University of South Carolina begins its fall semester on Thursday.
