Gamecocks Tied for Sixth After Opening Round of The Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The South Carolina men’s golf team finished the first round of The Carmel Cup tied for sixth place after shooting a 2-over 326 on Friday at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach California.

Sophomore Ben Dietrich wrapped up the round in a tie for ninth after carding the low round for the Gamecocks, with a 1-under 71. After making the turn at 1-under, Dietrich shot an even-par 36 on the back side and tallied four birdies on the day.

Junior Will Starke is in a tie for 19th after shooting an even-par 72. Seniors Will Murphy and Caleb Sturgeon and junior Matt NeSmith are all tied for 23rd after each turning in a 1-over 73, while junior Sean Kelly is tied for 33rd after posting a 2-over 74.

South Carolina will look to gain momentum on SEC foe Georgia over the next 36 holes. The Bulldogs turned in an 8-under 352 to take the first-round lead and hold a 3-shot lead over second place Texas Tech.

After making the turn at 4-over, senior Caleb Sturgeon shot a bogey-free 33 (-3).
