Fry Named Groza "Star of the Week"

Sept. 8, 2014

University of South Carolina sophomore placekicker Elliott Fry is one of three kickers from FBS division teams recognized as “Stars of the Week” for their performance last weekend by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission and the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award.

Fry turned in a perfect 4-for-4 field goal game to lead South Carolina to a 33-23 victory over East Carolina in Columbia on Saturday. The Frisco, Texas native connected from 42, 39, 26, and 20 yards out, and added 3 PATs for a total of 15 points. Fry went from freshman walk-on to freshman All-SEC honors last season, helping to earn him a spot on the Groza Preseason Watch List, and through two games he’s poised to again lead the Gamecocks in scoring. Fry’s performance helped the Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier to his 200th SEC coaching victory.

Others honored this week include Corey Acosta from Southern Miss and Casey Skowron from Arizona.

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday, December 11th. The three finalists will be honored at the 23rd Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 9th at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.
