The No. 24/23 South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1 SEC) host the No. 6/6 Georgia Bulldogs (1-0, 0-0 SEC) in an SEC Eastern Division matchup on Saturday, September 13 at a sold out Williams-Brice Stadium.
“We’re going to take it one play at a time,” said junior running back Mike Davis, “and go out there with enthusiasm and spirit and try to have fun.”
Davis and Georgia running back Todd Gurley are good friends. “We communicate here and there,” said Davis. “He actually came up here and came to my house. We’re real good friends. There’s no competition between me and him. We both want to see each other do good. (There’s) no trash talk between me and Gurley.”
Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott will likely start the same five guys who played the bulk of the action last week. “It’s not about who starts as you saw last week,” noted Elliott. “It’s about who has the hot hand. Cody (Waldrop) went in there and we scored on seven straight possessions, so I wasn’t going to change much of anything.”
Elliott was impressed by center Alan Knott, who made his first start against East Carolina. “He did pretty good,” said Elliott. “His snaps were really crisp. It’s a lot easier to play the quarterback position and the running back position when you have good snaps. I thought he did fine.”
Wide receiver Pharoh Cooper did not practice on Wednesday with a foot injury. His status for Saturday is uncertain. “Obviously he didn’t practice today,” said wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr., “so we’ll see.” If Cooper is not able to play, K.J. Brent and Deebo Samuel are the other options at that receiver position, according to Spurrier Jr.
Game time Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m. and the contest will be televised nationally on CBS, with Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson in the booth and Allie LaForce working the sidelines.
The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Thursday afternoon.
