MILWAUKEE — The South Carolina women’s tennis team opened the fall season with an 8-1 record Friday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic at The Town Club in Milwaukee.
Brigit Folland, Caroline Dailey, Hadley Berg, Meghan Blevins and Megen Cochran all posted undefeated days for the Gamecocks. Four of the five also won their singles matches in straight sets. The day marked the first career wins for freshmen Berg and Cochran as well.
The event began with South Carolina facing Western Michigan for three doubles matches. Dailey teamed with Berg to defeat Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby 8-7. Blevins combined with Cochran to upend Tracy Kuhle and Olivia Myers 8-2, while Folland and Natalie Looney downed Yuriko Ono and Labina Petrovska 8-2.
For the afternoon, the Gamecocks matched up with Wisconsin for six singles contests. Folland, ranked No. 114 for the preseason, clipped Lauren Chypa 6-4, 6-3, and Blevins scored a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ekaterina Stepanova. Dailey won 6-2, 6-4 in a match with Anastasia Tripolskaya, Berg downed Kelsey Grambeau 6-4, 6-0, and Cochran needed three sets to dispatch Lauren Burich 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Wisconsin’s Sydney Ridnor posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Looney.
On Saturday, South Carolina takes on Wisconsin in doubles and then host Marquette in singles.
