GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team opened doubles play at the Furman Fall Classic on Friday in Greenville, S.C., with a strong 8-2 record that landed two teams in championship matches for their respective flights. The doubles portion of the event concludes Saturday morning with matches set for 9 a.m. starts.
In flight two doubles, Megen Cochran and Caroline Dailey teamed up for an 8-6 win against Zordani/McCulloch from Iowa and then followed with an 8-4 defeat over Clousing/Eidukonyte of Clemson in the semifinals. Meghan Blevins and Brigit Folland reached the finals of flight three, beginning with an 8-1 triumph over Leavell/Yates of Vanderbilt and an 8-3 victory against Clemson’s Pederzani/Ruiz.
Hadley Berg and Elixane Lechemia combined for an 8-2 win over Henderson/Guevremont from Tennessee in the first round of flight one doubles. The Gamecocks took an 8-1 loss to No. 8-ranked Gumulya/Rompies from Clemson in the semis. Natalie Looney and Alex Martin also posted a 1-1 record on the day for flight three, first beating Bryde/Caswell from Furman 8-2 before suffering an 8-3 setback to Antal/Sharma of Vandy.
Katie Fosnacht and Ximena Siles Luna scored a couple of wins in the fourth flight of doubles against players who teamed up from different schools. They defeated Gil (Furman) and Dunn (Alabama) first 8-5 and then the combo of Crawford (Iowa) and Dunn 8-1.
In singles, South Carolina combined for a 4-6 record between the seven flights. No. 114 Folland picked up the best win of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win versus Florida State’s Emily Fanning in the quarterfinals of flight two. Siles Luna beat Blair Martin from Furman 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in flight five, while Martin registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Joan van Lochem of Furman in flight six. Fosnacht picked up a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Maggie Leavell from Vanderbilt in flight seven.
