GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team won two doubles titles at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Gamecocks took both titles in dramatic fashion, as the two matches each required a tiebreaker to decide the winner. Megen Cochran and Caroline Dailey won flight two with a 7-5 decision in the breaker over Greene/Zabor from Alabama. Meghan Blevins and Brigit Folland then took flight three from Antal/Sharma of Vanderbilt by an 8-6 count after the match knotted up at 7-all.
Ximena Siles Luna and Alex Martin highlighted South Carolina’s efforts in singles by advancing to the finals of their respective flights. Siles Luna advanced with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Ellen Silver from Iowa. Siles Luna will face Ashleigh Antal from Vanderbilt in the championship Sunday. Martin defeated Iowa’s Anastasia Reimchen 7-5, 6-1 and will play Ellie Yates of Vandy for the title.
South Carolina picked up several more victories on the day in singles consolation play. Blevins defeated Bennett Dunn of Alabama 6-3, 6-2 in the backdraw of flight three, while Hadley Berg upended Furman’s Karlee Bryde 6-4, 6-1 in the flight four backdraw. Cochran scored a flight five victory over Aryn Greene of Alabama in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Natalie Looney also snagged a consolation win by downing her teammate Alison Mills in flight six 6-4, 6-2.
