CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team opened play in the Kitty Harrison Invitational on Friday in North Carolina. A split squad played matches at North Carolina’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, while others played at Duke’s Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham.

Caroline Dailey, Ximena Siles Luna, Brigit Folland and Meghan Blevins took on Duke in singles action in Durham and registered three impressive wins. Siles Luna defeated the nation’s No. 3-ranked freshman Christina Makarova in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 1-0, while Blevins upended No. 109 Alyssa Smith 7-6, 6-3. Folland also won in straight sets against Annie Mulholland 6-3, 6-4. Dailey nearly recorded the biggest win of her career with a near miss versus No. 12 Ester Goldfeld in a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 loss. For doubles, Blevins and Folland teamed up to down Epstein and Faure from Virginia 8-4.

The Gamecocks also played three doubles matches against Penn State in Durham. Folland and Blevins blanked Blik and Whiteaway 8-0, and Siles Luna and Hadley Berg did the same against Petruzillo and Minniti. Megen Cochran and Dailey also picked up an 8-6 triumph versus Shukow and Xu.

In Chapel Hill, the Gamecocks played two doubles matches against Maryland and one versus Davidson. Berg and Siles Luna combined for an 8-4 triumph over Maryland’s Bredikhina and Tour, while Cochran and Dailey suffered an 8-5 setback to Gaudreault and Stanova. Natalie Looney and Alex Martin lost 8-4 to Davidson’s duo of Feaster and Sexton, but rebounded to defeat Fieldsend and Nelson from NC State 8-6. Looney managed a win in singles against Barbora Lazarova from Elon 6-7, 6-4, (10-5), while Martin lost 6-4, 6-3 to Erica Braschi of Elon. Berg snagged a 3-6, 6-3, (10-5) win over Olga Bredikhina from Maryland.

Play in the Kitty Harrison Invitational continues Saturday morning.
