ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 23 South Carolina women’s tennis team closed out the Michigan Invitational on Monday with a sweep of three doubles matches against No. 39 USF at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
South Carolina snagged two 6-1 victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Hadley Berg and Caroline Dailey defeated Jessica Cortes and Vera Bessonova at one, while Brigit Folland and Natalie Looney upended Olga Martinez and Juliana Cardosa at two. At three doubles, Ximena Siles Luna and Alex Martin came back from a 4-3 deficit to beat Olaya Garrido and Alicia Robinson 7-5.
The Gamecocks won two singles matches from No. 31 Texas Tech. Folland scored a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win from Gabriela Talaba and Berg earned her first collegiate win against a ranked opponent in defeating No. 89 Sarah Dvorak 6-3, 6-3 at three singles. Dailey nearly earned a victory over No. 35-ranked Lynn Kiro, falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at the top position.
Siles Luna and Looney lost their matches on courts four and five in straight sets to the Red Raiders. At six, Martin lost in three sets to Sam Czarniak as did Alison Mills to Horetense Boscher at seven.
Carolina begins dual match play Friday in Albuquerque, N.M., with a doubleheader against Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona.
