S&F: You have limited interaction with your team during the summer due to NCAA rules, but is this summer any different than in the past in regards to getting your team ready for the upcoming season?
The summer has gone very well. Our strength coach Joe Connolly basically has told me the attendance has been close to perfect. The players are giving excellent effort, camaraderie amongst the team seems to be very good. That’s basically what you hope happens all through the summer workouts. Our players work out four mornings a week from about 6-7 a.m. A lot is asked of college football players these days. Certainly all of us coaches are happy and pleased that they’re going to get some extra money this year. I think scholarship athletes here at USC are scheduled to get around $4,200 for the year. Other than that, we’re looking forward to the season. We’re anxious to get back to being a top-10 program. We had some slippage last year. We hope we’ve helped our defense in hiring Jon Hoke and I think we have. I think we’re going to be the most improved defense in the SEC this coming year.
