GREENVILLE, S.C. ââ’¬” All three rounds of doubles competition took place on day one of the Furman Fall Classic on Friday, as rain forced competition indoors. 31 doubles tandems representing eight schools were divided into three flights and competed in a bracket-style format.
South Carolina freshmen Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Ellie Zogg defeated fellow Gamecocks Brigit Folland and Paige Cline to win the title in Flight Two. The pairings combined to go 5-1 on the day after each winning their first two matches.
Sophomore Hadley Berg and freshman Rachel Rohrabacher advanced to the 5th place match in Flight One after dropping their opening round match. They would end up settling for 6th in the flight after falling to Sadie Hammond and Eve Repic from Tennessee.
Competing in Flight Three, sophomore Alex Mills and freshman Hannah Templeton rebounded from a first-round loss to win their final match of the day, 8-5, over Vanderbilt’s Maggie Leavell and Ellie Yates.
Singles flights get underway at the Mickel Tennis Center on Saturday. South Carolina enters Folland in Flight One, Rohrabacher in Flight Two, Gamarra Martins in Flight Three, Berg and Cochran in Flight 4, Zogg and Cline in Flight 5 and Templeton and Mills in Flight 6.
