COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” South Carolina women’s tennis completed the opening round of singles at the Furman Fall Classic with three Gamecocks in position to finish third or better in their respective flights. Flights one and two also completed their second round matches while all other flights continue Sunday. Overall, South Carolina came away with six wins on the day.

Freshman Rachel Rohrabacher will play Zoe Douglas of Iowa for third place in flight two on Sunday. She advanced to the semifinals of her flight before falling to Sadie Hammond of Tennessee on Saturday. In flight four, sophomore Hadley Berg can advance to the championship match with a win over Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras. Berg defeated Lana Rush of Florida State, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Paige Cline can advance to the championship of flight five with a win over Alabama’s Joanna Nena Savva. Cline breezed past Clemson’s Jenny Moinard, 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday.

In flight one, junior Brigit Folland fell in the second round to Vanderbilt’s Courtney Colton before defeating Iowa’s Anastasia Reimchen 6-2, 6-2. She is headed to the fifth-place match in her flight, where she will take on Daneika Borthwick of Florida State. Freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins dropped her opening round match in flight three, but looks to rebound against Kim Kermet of Tennessee. A win would advance her to the fifth-place match.

Also playing in flight five, freshman Ellie Zogg fell to Tennessee’s Tiffany Tavares, but can advance to the fifth-place match with a win over Aimee Tarun of Iowa. Sophomore Allison Mills and freshman Hannah Templeton both earned wins in flight six, which is being played in a round robin format. Templeton defeated Tennessee’s Margo Taylor and Mills took down Carin Runefelt of Iowa.

The second round of singles competition will begin at 8:30 a.m., Sunday with the final round to follow.
