Sept. 27, 2015

GREENVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina women’s tennis wrapped up play at the Furman Invite Sunday, adding three more second-round victories before the event was cut short due to inclement weather. Sophomore Hadley Berg highlighted the weekend for the Gamecocks, as she went 2-0 and advanced to the championship match of flight four.

After defeating Lana Rush of Florida State on Sunday, Berg would be tested by Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras on Sunday. Berg dropped the first set of the match before storming back and taking the match, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(1). The win advanced her to the title round where she was set to square off with junior Brittany Lindl of Tennessee had play not been suspended.

Carolina also earned wins on Sunday from freshmen Ingrid Gamarra Martins in flight three and Ellie Zogg in flight five. Gamarra Martins took control early against Tennessee’s Kim Kermet and never let up en route to an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win. Zogg dropped the opening set of her match before rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(8) win over Iowa’s Aimee Tarun. With their wins, Gamarra Martins and Zogg advanced to the fifth-place match in their flights. Junior Brigit Folland also advanced to the fifth-place match in flight one after a win on Saturday, but did not compete on Sunday.

South Carolina placed a pair of Gamecocks in third-place matches within their respective flights. Freshman Paige Cline fell to Alabama’s Joanna Nena Savva on Sunday in flight five, dropping her to the third-place match, which was not played. After a win and a loss on Saturday, freshman Rachel Rohrabacher was set to play for third place against Iowa’s Zoe Douglas on Sunday, but the match was not contested.

The Gamecocks return to action Oct. 2-5 as they host the South Carolina Fall Classic at the Carolina Tennis Center. Stay tuned to for information about the event.
