CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Paige Cline and a pair of doubles teams fell in Semifinal Round matchups at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Cline dropped a match to No. 11 Joana Eidukonyte of Clemson, 6-3, 7-5, ending her most impressive event of the fall. She picked up wins over ninth-seeded Martina Frantova from NC State and fellow Gamecock Ingrid Gamarra Martins on her way to the semifinals.
“This is obviously a tournament that has some high level teams,” head coach Kevin Epley said. We were curious to see if anyone could step up to prove that they could play with the better players out there. Ingrid and Paige proved they can play at a high level. In Paige’s case, coming in as a freshman and making the semifinals is a victory for her. The way she did it was even more impressive. She was very composed and mature on the court.
Two doubles teams also fell just shy of the finals. The fourth-seeded pairing of Hadley Berg and Brigit Folland was unable to get past Eidukonyte and Theresa Piontek of Clemson, falling 8-5, while Martins and freshman Ellie Zogg were downed by second-seeded Jessie Aney and Kate Vialle of North Carolina.
The Gamecocks close out the fall with a return to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Kitty Harrison Invitational Nov. 6-8. For team news and updates, visit www.GamecocksOnline.com or follow the team on Twitter (@GamecockWTennis).
