CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis completed Day One of the Kitty Harrison Invitational and, despite wet conditions and an unplanned change in location, earned a sweep in singles of Georgia Southern. Two doubles teams also competed, splitting matches with Penn State and East Carolina.
Sophomore Alison Mills and freshmen Paige Cline and Hannah Templeton each collected singles wins on Friday after moving from Chapel Hill, N.C., to Durham, N.C., in the late afternoon. The Gamecocks didn’t let a change in scenery effect their play. Cline ran away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mariana Ranzahuer at No. 1, Templeton surged past Francisca Norregaard for a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Mills cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mary Phillips Smith at No. 3.
In doubles, Carolina doubles teams started the day competing against Penn State, splitting the matches. Freshman Ellie Zogg and Cline picked up a big win over Devan McCluskey and Kimberley-Ann Surin of Penn State, 8-6, while Templeton and Mills suffered an 8-7 (5) defeat to Katia Blik and Taylor Shukow. The Gamecocks earned a split later in the day against East Carolina as well. Templeton and Mills, this time, got the win, taking down Katie Hoch and Betsy Zurawel, 8-4, while Zogg and Cline fell to Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina, 8-5.
The Gamecocks continue play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational Saturday with doubles matches against Rice starting at 9 a.m., and singles matches against Texas at 11:30 a.m. Visit www.GamecocksOnline.com and follow the team on Twitter (@GamecockWTennis) for results and team updates.
