Muschamp Adds to Staff

University of South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp continues to assemble his staff. On the field, Coleman Hutzler will serve as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach. Off the field, Clyde Wrenn has been named Director of High School Relations and Assistant to Coach Muschamp, while Robbie Liles has been promoted to Director of Player Personnel, it was announced today.

Coleman Hutzler, 31, spent the 2015 season as the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Boston College. During his year in Chestnut Hill, freshman Michael Walker ranked in the top-10 in the nation in kick return average, while the Eagles were second in the nation in punt return defense, allowing just 1.66 yards per return. BC also blocked three punts on the year. Hutzler was also part of a staff that produced the nation’s stingiest defense, as the Eagles allowed just 254.3 yards per game and 24.1 percent of third down conversions and was second in rushing defense at 82.8 yards per contest.

Previously, Hutzler logged two stints at Florida, first from 2010-11 as Assistant to Linebackers and Special Teams Coordinator, then again for the 2014 season, handling special teams and outside linebackers.

In 2014, Florida had the second-best punt return average in the SEC and the 17th-best unit in the nation. UF punter Kyle Christy earned AP second-team All-SEC honors after averaging 44.3 yards per punt, the nation’s 14th-best average. As the Gators outside linebackers coach, Hutzler coached Dante Fowler, Jr. to a Coaches First-Team All-SEC selection.

“Coleman is a very detailed, high energy coach,” said Muschamp. “He did a great job for us at Florida and had an outstanding year at Boston College under Steve Addazio.”

Between his stints in Gainesville, Hutzler was the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at New Mexico from 2012-13. He coached punter Ben Skaer to first-team All-Mountain West accolades and returner Carlos Wiggins to MWC Special Teams Player of the Year and a second-team All-America honors in 2013. Wiggins returned three kickoffs for touchdowns and the Lobos were first in the conference and 15th in the nation in kickoff returns. The Lobos improved from 112th nationally to 25th in net punting and their punt-return defense improved to No. 19 from 106th.

Hutzler began his coaching career at the University of San Diego, working as a defensive assistant in 2006. He moved to Palo Alto to become a recruiting assistant at Stanford in 2007. He was an assistant to co-defensive coordinators Ron Lynn and Andy Buh and to DJ Durkin at Stanford in 2008 and 2009.

The Las Vegas, Nev., native played football at Middlebury College in Vermont, earning his degree in psychology. A linebacker on the team from 2002-05, he was a team captain as a senior. He also was a four-year catcher on the baseball team. He and his wife, Cobey, have a son, Micah, and a daughter, Leila.

Cobey is a former director of volleyball operations at Stanford and was the Florida Class 3A Coach of the Year in 2011 while working at P.K. Yonge High. She played volleyball at UNLV and Michigan and is the daughter of Hawaii volleyball coach Dave Shoji, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I volleyball history.

Clyde Wrenn returns to the football offices after working for the past three years in the development arm of the Gamecocks’ athletics department. He has more than 30 years of high school, college and professional experience to his credit.

Wrenn spent 11 years at South Carolina as an Assistant Athletics Director from 1993-2004, first as Football Recruiting Coordinator and later for High School Relations, before leaving to pursue other business opportunities. Prior to his return to Columbia, he spent one year as the director of football operations at Southern Miss under Ellis Johnson.

“Clyde brings tremendous experience working with the high school coaches in the state of South Carolina,” said Muschamp. “He is extremely well thought of throughout Gamecock Nation and will be a valuable asset to our program.”

A native of Chester, S.C., Wrenn was a football coach at the high school level for seven years and worked as the recruiting coordinator on the football staff at Clemson for 11 seasons. He also spent two years as a scout with the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Wrenn earned his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State in 1965. He later received a Master’s degree from Western Carolina in 1969.

Robbie Liles has been part of the South Carolina football staff for the past 15 years. He was promoted to Director of Recruiting Operations in the spring of 2013 after spending the previous seven years as Director of High School Relations. Prior to that, he served as the Recruiting Graduate Assistant.

In his most recent role, Liles directed the on-campus recruiting efforts, managing the day-to-day operations in the recruiting office. He also served as the High School Relations Director for the football staff. Additional responsibilities included coordinating official and unofficial visits, assisting with football camps and clinics, as well as assisting with team and bowl travel.

“It was evident in the short time that I’ve been here that Robbie is a valuable part of our staff,” said Muschamp. “He has an outstanding work ethic, is intelligent, has a great understanding of the University, and is well-liked by the high school coaches. It only makes sense to expand his role with the football program.”

Liles earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport & Entertainment Management in 2001 from South Carolina. He later earned a master’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management from South Carolina in 2004.

Liles came to South Carolina after spending five years coaching high school football, including three seasons at Columbia’s Hammond School. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Thomas Heyward Academy in Ridgeland, S.C. While at Thomas Heyward, Liles earned three letters in football and baseball. He was named all-conference his senior year in football, as well as earning MVP of his team.

Liles is married to the former Lauren Edwards, who is also a Gamecock alum. The couple’s first child, Cole, was born in May 2015.
