COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” Freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins of the No. 10 South Carolina women’s tennis team has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The honor is her SEC-leading third of the season and the sixth weekly honor for the Gamecocks this spring, which doubles the next highest team total.

Martins swept her singles and doubles matches last weekend as South Carolina earned a split against No. 25 Texas A&M and No. 15 LSU. Playing at No. 2 singles since the onset of SEC play, the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native topped Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M in straight sets on Friday before taking down No. 48 Jessica Golovin of LSU, 6-1, 6-2, on Sunday, helping Carolina improve to 3-1 against top-15 foes. Paired with fellow freshman Rachel Rohrabacher for the first time in doubles, the duo posted wins of 6-1 and 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. The victories helped propel her individual ranking to No. 63 in this week’s ITA Rankings.

Three other Gamecocks have received weekly honors this spring. Sophomore Hadley Berg and junior Caroline Dailey have been named the SEC Player of the Week, while freshman Paige Cline was tabbed Freshman of the Week on March 9.

South Carolina is currently tied for third in the SEC standings at 7-2. The Gamecocks close their regular season with a pair of SEC road weekends, starting this weekend with matches at No. 13 Auburn on Friday and No. 56 Alabama Sunday.
