Gamecocks Finish UVA Invitational With Two Titles

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The South Carolina women’s tennis team is headed back to Columbia with two tournament titles in tow after a successful weekend at the UVA Invitational. Hadley Berg and Paige Cline combined to capture a doubles title, while Cline emerged as the top player in her singles draw.

“Overall, it was a very strong tournament for Paige in singles,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “She played a great finals match and she’s continuing to get better and better. Hadley and Paige played some of the best doubles that I’ve seen them play. There were a number of positive things that we saw, but we also have some things to work on and we need some girls to take that next step forward.”

The first part of the final day at the UVA Invitational saw the Gamecocks compete in two doubles finals matches. Berg and Cline captured Carolina’s first title of the fall when they topped Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer of UVA. Rachel Rohrabacher and Silvia Chinellato fell in their draw’s final match. In the Blue draw consolation bracket, Hannah Templeton and Alison Mills picked up a win over a duo from Marshall.

Due to inclement weather and players and teams withdrawing, Sunday’s singles brackets were changed. However, Paige Cline’s match was not affected by the alterations and she fought hard to collect a three-set victory over Old Dominion’s Holly Hutchinson. Also playing finals matches on Sunday were Berg and Chinellato. Both dropped their respective matches. In all, the Gamecocks had three of the eight spots in finals play.
