COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina equestrian student-athletes Madison Butehorn and Madison Thiel earned SEC Rider of the Month awards for September, the league office announced Wednesday. The monthly conference honor is the first for both Gamecocks.

Butehorn was named SEC Rider of the Month for equitation over fences. The junior from Naples, Fla., earned the first two victories of her collegiate career last month, an 85-76 win over Baylor’s Brittany Mirkov on Sept. 23 and an 85-79 triumph over Texas A&M’s Haley Webster one week later. In addition to scoring the highest fences total in both meets, Butehorn was named M.O.P. both times.

Thiel is the SEC Rider of the Month for reining. A sophomore from Dublin, Ohio, Thiel was the M.O.P. against Baylor, when she scored a 71-68.5 victory over Elizabeth Shank. Against Texas A&M, the sophomore was a 68-66 winner over Sarah McEntire.

Butehorn and Thiel are the first Gamecocks recognized by the SEC office since January 2016, when alum Abigail Pait was the horsemanship honoree, and they are the 20th and 21st Gamecocks to win league monthly honors since 2012.
