Martins, Horvit and Dailey Advance at ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Gamecock women’s tennis team got outstanding efforts from several student-athletes once again as they finished out the third day of competition at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. The headliners on Saturday were Ingrid Gamarra Martins, who advanced to the quarterfinals in singles, and Caroline Dailey and Mia Horvit, who advanced to the doubles semifinals. Horvit also fought her way into the consolation singles semifinals.
“We had a solid day all in all,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “Mia and Caroline had a great doubles performance. Ingrid is using each match to improve. Brigit and Silvia also had some gutsy performances. All in all, we are happy with what we are bringing to the table, but I still think we can play a bit better. Now we are in the late stages of the tournament and we have to lay it all out on the table, compete hard and go for it.”
Saturday’s slate featured two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. In singles, Brigit Folland and Martins picked up wins in the round of 32. Martins also came out on top in her round of 16 match, putting her in the quarterfinals on Sunday. She is Carolina’s lone representative left in the main draw singles bracket. After an opening round loss on Friday, Horvit has rebounded to advance to the singles consolation semifinals.
Horvit and Dailey continued their strong doubles run with another victory on Saturday. The duo will play in the semifinals on Sunday.
