Horvit Claims Consolation Title, Doubles Final Awaits Monday
Oct. 23, 2016
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team was well represented in the late stages of this weekend’s ITA Carolina Regional Championships and Sunday saw a couple Gamecocks continue their winning ways. Freshman Mia Horvit captured the singles consolation crown, while she and senior Caroline Dailey moved forward into Monday’s doubles title match.
Horvit capped off her first weekend of singles play at the collegiate level in style. After dropping her main draw opening round match to Furman’s Ansley Speaks, the Palm City, Fla. native won five straight contests over the last two days to collect the consolation title. Now, Horvit and Dailey will look to finish off the tournament with a doubles championship after a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (7) victory over North Carolina’s pair of Rachel Baker and Chloe Pizer. On Monday, the duo will go to battle with Ellyse Hamlin and Samantha Harris of Duke at 10 a.m.
Also on the court for Carolina on Sunday was Ingrid Gamarra Martins. The sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil opened her day with a quarterfinal victory over Clemson’s Ayan Broomfield. In her semifinal match, Martins went to a third set tiebreak with North Carolina’s Jessie Aney but the decisive final set went the way of her opponent.
