Nov. 7, 2016
University of South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley has been recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Gamecocks’ 31-21 win over Missouri on Saturday, the league office announced today.
Bentley, a 6-3, 223-pounder from Opelika, Ala., made his third career start against the Tigers and turned in his best performance to date. He completed 22-of-28 passes for 254 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Gamecocks rolled up a season-high 428 yards in earning the SEC Eastern Division win.
In three games this season, Bentley has completed 73 percent of his passes (54-of-74) for 622 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions, helping Carolina to three-straight wins.
Bentley becomes the third Gamecock to be recognized by the SEC this season, joining placekicker Elliott Fry (Special Teams Player of the Week vs. Vanderbilt) and cornerback Jamarcus King (Defensive Player of the Week vs. Tennessee).
Bentley will lead the Gamecocks (5-4, 3-4 SEC) into Gainesville this Saturday for an SEC Eastern Division showdown with the No. 22/16 Florida Gators (6-2, 4-2 SEC). Game time is set for noon ET and the contest will be televised nationally on CBS with Brad Nessler and Aaron Taylor in the booth and John Schriffen working the sidelines.
