Six Ranked to Begin 2017 Season

Jan. 5, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s tennis will begin the 2017 season with six ranked players in the ITA singles rankings, the most in program history, and ranked No. 16 as a team under head coach Kevin Epley, now in his fifth season with the program.

Ingrid Gamarra Martins headlines the Gamecocks ranked No. 16 after finishing her freshman campaign with four ranked victories and a 23-11 singles record.

Three underclasswomen, freshmen Mia Horvit (No. 62) and Silvia Chinellato (No. 100), and sophomore Paige Cline (No. 72.) also made the list of ranked singles players.

Seniors Brigit Folland and Caroline Dailey close out the ranked singles players with Folland at No. 122 and Dailey tied at No. 125.

The Gamecocks’ No. 16 ranking marks the third consecutive year they have started the season among the top-30 after launching their 2016 campaign ranked No. 28 and the 2015 season No. 23. South Carolina finished No. 17 in the final poll last year after going 19-8 overall and hosting NCAA Regionals.

South Carolina kicks off the 2017 season on Sunday, Jan. 15, at Furman. Follow the team on Twitter and Instagram @GamecockWTennis, or GamecocksOnline.com.
