DURHAM, N.C. – More relay wins followed the South Carolina swim team as it traveled north to Duke for the second day of the Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational. The women picked up wins in the 200 yard medley relay and 800 yard freestyle relay. In total, 16 new personal bests were recorded – six on the men’s side and 10 for the women ââ’¬” and three individuals made the top five of their respective finals.
The women bookended the night with wins, starting with Maggie Langdale, Megu Seidenberger, Katie Shannahan and Hannah Gerlock taking the 200 medley race. The foursome touched just .24 seconds ahead of teammates Carolne Petrone, Allison Wade, Mairyn Branaman and Charlsie Reneski. Petrone and Reneski teamed up again to close the day, joining in with Cooper Brown and Makenzie Miller to win the 800 yard freestyle race in 7:50.78.
Individually, Langdale and Branaman had the team’s top finishes of the night. The duo took third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke and both set big personal bests in the process. For the men, freshman Justin Rose had their top finish by taking fifth in the 100 yard butterfly, hitting a personal best of 48.74 to move up after qualifying eighth.
QUOTABLE: HEAD SWIMMING COACH McGee Moody
We had another great day today. There were some very strong races earlier today that set the tone for finals tonight. These athletes have had to face some last-second changes that were unexpected. A water main break changed the venue from UNC to Duke, but the athletes weren’t phased and had great races tonight.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Nicholas Pease lowered his collegiate best in the 100 yard backstroke by over a full set to take eighth in the prelims.
- Freshman Itay Goldfaden set a season best in the 100 yard breaststroke after touching in 56.37 in a time trial.
- Freshman Justin Rose lowered his season best in the 100 backstroke (50.68) and had almost a two second improvement in the 100 fly (48.74).
- The 100 yard backstroke was kind to all three of the Gamecock women who made the finals. Maggie Langdale (56.14), Mairyn Branaman (56.45) and Hannah Gerlock (59.29) all shattered their previous bests in the event.
- Along with her win as part of the 800 free relay team, Makenzie Miller also swam well individually. The junior touched in 1:52.52 for the 200 yard freestyle, almost four seconds faster than her last meet (1:56.18 on Jan. 27).
