HUMBLE, Texas — The South Carolina men’s golf team wrapped up play at the 2017 All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola on Sunday with another solid outing, shooting 285 (-3) on the final day to take fourth place in the 18-team field. Sophomore Scott Stevens was stellar again, shooting 68 (-4) on the final day to finish tied for second.

Stevens had just one bogey and five birdies (team-high) in the final round. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native, carded a 33 (-3) on the front nine for the second consecutive day and a 35 (-1) on the back. Stevens has now shot in the 60s in eight of his 15 rounds this season, which leads the team. He has finished in the top-10 in four of the team’s five events this season. His runner-up finish matches his career-best. Earlier this season in the fall, Stevens earned runner-up medalist honors at the Mau Jim Invitational, shooting the third-lowest score in school history, 198 (-15).

Huskey shot even par in the final round to finish tied for 25th. He had three birdies, shooting 34 (-2) on the front nine and 38 (+2) on the back. The Greenville, S.C. native, has played 10 of his 15 rounds this season at par or better.

Carolina’s two freshman, Caleb Proveaux and Jamie Wilson, had solid debuts in the starting lineup for the Gamecocks, each finishing the tournament tied for 32nd at 1-over. Proveaux carded a final round 72 (E), while Wilson posted a 73 (+1) on Sunday. Proveaux had four birdies and Wilson tallied three, all coming on the back nine. Each shot 2-under (34) on the back nine. Junior Ben Dietrich recorded a 77 (+5) with three birdies, to finish tied for 85th.

No. 13 Baylor fended off top-ranked Vanderbilt on the final day to secure the team title at 28-under with a final score of 836. Cooper Dosey for the Bears, who was the leader individually heading into the final round, shot even par Sunday to take home medalist honors at 10-under.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

“We played a pretty solid round today in some windy conditions. Scott finishing second after a tough first round is a heck of an accomplishment. Overall it was a good tournament for us, and I couldn’t be happier with the performance we got from our freshmen this week. This team has some room to improve, and I’m excited about making some adjustments before our next event at Palmetto.”

Round Changer

Scott Stevens posted his 26th career round of par or better on Sunday with his 68. The standout sophomore has nine career top-10 finishes, four of which have come in the 2016-17 season. He tied for the field lead in par-4 scoring average this weekend at 3.83, shooting 5-under. Stevens logged just three bogeys in 54 holes.

Notable

  • Carolina had 18 birdies in the final round Sunday, surpassing its previous tournament-high of 17 yesterday.
  • The Gamecocks finished three shots ahead of SEC foe No. 21 Auburn in the final team standings.
  • Wilson (11) and Stevens (10) were two of just 25 players in the field to log double-digit birdies. Wilson’s 11 birdies led the team, which finished with 44 (6th in the field) over the course of the three day event.

Up Next for the Gamecocks

South Carolina will be off for a few weeks and will return to action at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. on March 6-7. The Gamecocks will aim to defend their title from season. They dominated the tournament from start finish, shooting 821 (-19) to beat runner-up Virginia by 18 strokes. All five players in the Carolina lineup finished in the top-10, led by three-time All-American Matt NeSmith’s 7-under total, which earned him medalist honors.
