Mackenzie Boesel Earns SEC Freshman of the Week Award

March 6, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After an outstanding week, Gamecock second baseman Mackenzie Boesel earned the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week award, the league announced today.

The Yorba Linda, Calif., product posted a .550 batting average on the week, leading South Carolina with two home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored. She thrived against top competition in the Judi Garman Classic, hitting .571 in the five games, including posting all five Gamecock RBI in games against ranked Pac-12 teams Arizona State and UCLA. The freshman, who leads the Gamecocks in home runs, launched the three-run shot that helped SC stretch the game against No. 20/20 Arizona State into extra innings while also hitting the two-RBI double against No. 7/8 UCLA that gave the Gamecocks the lead. She also walked a team-best four times and was hit twice more in the seven-game slate on the week.

Boesel is the 14th Gamecock winner of the award since 2006 and the ninth under head coach Beverly Smith. Arkansas’s Nicole Schroeder claimed the Player of the Week honor, while Alabama’s Alexis Osorio and Florida’s Delaney Gourley shared the pitcher’s accolade.

The Gamecocks return home on Wednesday to take on Virginia Tech. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. EST at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
