MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Due to inclement weather, the final round of the 2017 General Hackler Championship has been cancelled tournament officials announced this morning. South Carolina will take home fourth place with a 36-hole tally of 584 (+8). Junior Keenan Huskey (T-5th) and sophomore Ryan Stachler (T-7th) both had their second straight top-10 finishes for the Gamecocks.

Huskey played a bogey free round to start the day yesterday, shooting 67 (-5) with five birdies. 13 of the Greenville, S.C., native’s 20 rounds this season have been played at par or better. He’s shot in the 60s a team-leading nine times. Huskey now has eight career top-10 finishes and five top-five finishes.

Stachler carded a 74 (+2) his first 18 holes on Saturday then ramped up his play in the second round, shooting a 69 (-3) with a team-high six birdies. The Alpharetta, Ga., native shot even par on the front nine, and 3-under on the back nine with five birdies.

The freshman duo of Caleb Proveaux and Jamie Wilson tied for 54th at 7-over. Proveaux shot 77 (+5) in the first round and bounced back nicely in the second round with a 74 (+2). Wilson shot 76 (+4) in the first round and 75 (+3) in the second round. Both Proveaux and Wilson finished the tournament with four birdies apiece. Sophomore Scott Stevens shot 74 (+2) in his opening round but was unable to find his groove in the second round, as he shot 79 (+7) to finish at 9-over. Ben Dietrich, who played as an individual for the Gamecocks, shot 78 (+6) and 84 (+12) and finished 81st at 18-over.

No. 15 Wake Forest took home the team crown at 15-under. No. 14 Kent State (-5) and No. 9 LSU (-3) finished second and third in front of South Carolina. The top-three teams were the only ones in the entire 15-team field to shoot under-par through 36 holes. It was a talented, deep tournament field overall with nine teams ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat rankings. Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest took home medalist honors at 9-under. The 12th ranked player in the nation shot 68 (-4) and 67 (-5) en route to the individual title.

The disappointment of not being able to compete in the final round was etched on their faces. We can no doubt build off this momentum as we prepare for the Valspar (Collegiate Invitational) next week.”

Stachler matched his career 18-hole low on Saturday, shooting his second 69 this week. His T-7th finish is a new career-best. Stachler had a previous career-best T-9th finish at the 2017 Palmetto Intercollegiate earlier this week in Aiken.

Notable

Huskey and Stachler each had eight birides to lead the team and tie for sixth in the field.
The Gamecocks had 26 birdies overall and tied for fourth in the field at 113 pars with No. 14 Kent State.

Up Next for the Gamecocks

Carolina will be in action for its third tournament in two weeks as it heads to the Valspar Collegiate Invitational March 19-21 in Palm City, Fla. The Gamecocks placed fifth in their toughest tournament of the regular season last year. All 15 teams in the tournament were ranked in the top-50 by Golfstat and 30 of the nation’s top-100 players via Golfstat competed in the event. Matt NeSmith (T-5th) and Scott Stevens (T-10th) paced Carolina with top-10 finishes.
