Awotunde Honored as SEC Athlete of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of South Carolina junior Josh Awotunde was honored as SEC Men’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Awotunde shares the weekly conference honor with Derek Jacobus of Arkansas.
The weekly SEC award is the third of Awotunde’s Gamecock career. He earned SEC Freshman of the Week laurels on April 28, 2015 and Field Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 12, 2016.
Awotunde made his 2017 outdoor debut last week at the Weems Baskin Invitational, and it could not have gone better for the Franklinville, N.J., native. Awotunde was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put, and his mark of 64-10 ¾ is the best in the nation so far this outdoor season.
Awotunde is the fourth Gamecock honored by the SEC with an athlete of the week nod this season. Fellow thrower Eric Favors earned Men’s Freshman of the Week laurels on Feb. 21, the same day Taranisha Taylor was named Women’s Runner of the Week. Newcomer Darrell Singleton Jr. added to the tally March 21, when he garnered a Men’s Freshman of the Week nod.
