ATHENS, Ga. — South Carolina concluded play at the 2017 Liz Murphey Collegiate Sunday, falling to Purdue in its final match of the three-day event at UGA Golf Course. The No. 11 Gamecocks and No. 22 Boilermakers each earned 2.5 points in the contest, but Purdue grabbed the win due to a larger margin of victory in matches won.

With the loss, Carolina finished the tournament with a mark of 2-1 in match-play action. The Gamecocks, who were placed in the Black Bracket following their 10th-place finish in the event’s stroke-play portion Friday, notched head-to-head victories over Old Dominion and Troy Saturday.

Sophomore Marion Veysseyre and senior Katelyn Dambaugh both earned a point for Carolina Sunday. Veysseyre turned in a steady round against Purdue’s Covadonga Sanjuan after tallying pars on 14 of her 17 holes. The Lachapelle-Auzac, France, native notched a birdie on the par-3 16th to go 1-up before earning pars on each of her final seven holes to secure the 2&1 win.

Dambaugh needed just 14 holes to register a 6&4 victory over Linn Andersson of the Boilermakers. The Gamecock standout took her first lead of the match after Andersson’s triple bogey on No. 16, and she stretched her advantage to 3-up following her birdie on the par-4 second. Dambaugh clinched a point for the Gamecocks with a birdie on No. 5.

Carolina senior Jia Xin Yang ended her match all-square with Purdue’s August Kim. A birdie on No. 11 gave the Beijing, China, native a 1-up advantage through two holes, and her third birdie of the afternoon came on No. 9. and gave Yang a share of the point. Gamecock junior Ainhoa Olarra fell 7&5 to Purdue’s Marta Martin, while freshman Ana Pelaez suffered a 4&3 loss to Micaela Farah of the Boilermakers.

No. 8 Georgia, the host of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, won the tournament after grabbing a 3-1-1 victory over top-ranked Alabama in the championship match of the Red Bracket Sunday.

Round Changer

After grabbing a 1-up lead with a birdie on No. 16, Marion Veysseyre tallied pars on nine of her final 10 holes to hold off Purdue’s Covadonga Sanjuan and notch her third-straight match-play win.

Notable

  • Marion Veysseyre ended the weekend with an unbeaten 3-0 mark in match play. The Gamecock sophomore is 3-1 overall in match play for her collegiate career.
  • Carolina senior Katelyn Dambaugh tied for 14th in the stroke-play portion of the Liz Murphey Collegiate following her 4-over 76 Friday. The performance gave the Goose Creek, S.C., native her sixth top-20 showing of the season.
  • With a T-18th finish (+5) on day one, junior Ainhoa Olarra notched her fifth top-20 showing in her last six events. Olarra boasts nine top-20 finishes for her career.
