No. 12 Gamecocks Take Down No. 13 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY — No. 12 South Carolina women’s tennis defeated No. 13 Kentucky Sunday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Center. The Gamecocks improved to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in the SEC, while the Wildcats fell to 15-7 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
Kentucky took a 1-0 lead with doubles wins on courts one and two. Emily Fanning and Justina Mikulskte notched a 6-4 victory on court three, followed closely by Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi (2) with a 6-3 triumph on court one to claim the point. Though the point was clinched, the match on court two finished out ending in a 6-4 victory for Kentucky.
South Carolina claimed four out of six of the first sets, on the way to taking the first three singles matches. Ingrid Gamarra Martins (43) evened the score with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two. Brigit Folland contributed next from court six, taking down Morgan Chumney 6-4, 6-4. Paige Cline gave the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory of her own from the No. 3 spot. Sutjiadi (19) brought the score within one, taking down Mia Horvit (53) 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. The remaining two matches would go to three sets to decide the outcome of the match.
Fanning tied it up for the Wildcats, taking down junior Hadley Berg in a close 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 battle on court four, leaving it to freshman Silvia Chinellato to close the match. Chinellato fell 7-5 in the first set, but dug deep to claim the remaining two sets in a commanding fashion posting a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory and clinching the match for the Gamecocks with a 4-3 final score.
