Cayla Drotar Named SEC Freshman of the Week
April 18, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock pitcher Cayla Drotar gained SEC Freshman of the Week honors today after her two-way performance in the Gamecocks’ win against No. 1/2 Florida State.
Drotar tossed five innings and held the country’s top-ranked offense by batting average to two runs and four hits. The Hartsville, S.C., freshman also produced at the plate, hitting two doubles in a 2-for-3 day, with a pinch runner for her scoring one of the Gamecocks’ runs in the 7-2 win. That’s the fourth win for South Carolina against a No. 1-ranked team in the NFCA poll since 1995. Drotar followed that with a start as the designated player on Saturday and went 1-for-2 with a walk.
The second Gamecock to claim SEC Freshman of the Week honors this year, Drotar joins Mackenzie Boesel, who claimed the award on March 6. Caroline Seitz from Mississippi State earned the SEC Player of the Week award, while Florida’s Kelly Barnhill took the SEC Pitcher of the Week honor.
South Carolina hosts Charleston Southern in a doubleheader today at 5 p.m. before closing the home stand against top-10 Auburn in this weekend’s SEC series.
