Gamecocks Land Two on SEC Softball Postseason Listings
May 9, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina infielders Mackenzie Boesel and Kaylea Snaer both garnered postseason recognition from the Southeastern Conference coaches, the league announced on Tuesday. Boesel earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team, while Snaer took the first-baseman spot on the SEC All-Defensive Team.
Boesel leads South Carolina with a .333 batting average, .438 on-base percentage and .556 slugging percentage. Her seven home runs are one shy of the Gamecocks’ freshman-year record of eight, set by her teammate Snaer. She’s one of three Gamecocks who have started every game.
Snaer currently has the highest fielding percentage of a Gamecock first baseman in a single season at .998, only making one error on the year. She’s fourth in the SEC in putouts and second in fielding double plays. At the plate, she’s hit a team-best 14 doubles and eight home runs, with eight of those doubles and four of the round-trippers coming in SEC play. In her career, Snaer’s set South Carolina’s career record in walks and is one shy of matching the doubles mark.
Both Tennessee and Florida took two of the individual awards. The Gators’ Tim Walton took the SEC Coach of the Year, while Kelly Barnhill earned SEC Pitcher of the Year accolades. The Vols’ Meghan Gregg was named SEC Player of the Year, and Caylan Arnold garnered the SEC Freshman of the Year award. Auburn’s Kasey Cooper was picked as the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Boesel’s the fourth Gamecock under head coach Beverly Smith to make the SEC All-Freshman Team, while Snaer’s the third South Carolina player to make the SEC All-Defensive Team.
South Carolina takes on seventh-seeded Kentucky in Wednesday’s opening round of the SEC Tournament, hosted by Tennessee. First pitch on Wed. is scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT on the SEC Network.
