COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College Swimming Coaches Association of America released its Scholar All-America teams Wednesday, and the South Carolina swimming & diving program was once again honored for its excellence in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s teams received Scholar All-America Team honors, while 20 student-athletes were named Scholar All-Americans.
The Gamecock women’s program once again stood tall as one of the nation’s strongest academic squads. Carolina’s team GPA of 3.71 was tied for second-highest in the nation, just .06 points behind Brown University. Last season, the Gamecocks finished the academic year with the top team GPA in the nation.
Individually on the women’s side, Emma Barksdale, Kersten Dirrane, Mikaela Lujan, Allyson Nied and Julia Vincent were honored as CSCAA first-team selections, while Megan Carlson, Emily Cornell, Marissa DelGado, Albury Higgs, Christina Lappin, Edith Lingmann, Heather Merritt, Marissa Roth and Sarah Smith were honorable mention picks. Student-athletes who finished the year with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and qualified for the NCAA Championships were recognized on the first team, while student-athletes with a 3.5 who achieved a B cut or qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships earned a spot on the honorable mention list.
The Carolina men finished the season with a team GPA of 3.33, 22nd-best in the nation. Cody Bekemeyer, Jonathan Boland, Tomas Peribonio, Caleb Tosh and Nils Wich-Glasen were selected to the first team, while Jordan Gotro and Kevin Liu collected spots on the honorable mention list.
QUOTING HEAD COACH McGee Moody
“Our athletes take their work in the classroom very seriously. They train hard in the pool, but they also study hard when it’s time to take care of business in the classroom. That’s always been a hallmark of our program, and I am just as proud of our athletes for their academic accomplishments as I am anything they do in the pool. These young men and women are very deserving of this honor.”
