No. 11 Women’s Golf at ANNIKA Intercollegiate

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — No. 11 South Carolina women’s golf continues its fall season this weekend at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Eden Prairie, Minn. The 54-hole event, which features a 12-team field, takes place Oct. 1-3 at Olympic Hills Golf Club.

HISTORY AT THE ANNIKA INTERCOLLEGIATE

South Carolina has competed at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate each year since the event started in 2014. The Gamecocks won the inaugural tournament three years ago, finishing atop the leaderboard with a 54-hole mark of 854 (-10). Carolina carded a program-record 274 (-14) in the opening round of the 2016 ANNIKA Intercollegiate en route to a sixth-place showing. Anita Uwadia tied for 11th last season after shooting par or better in each round.

BREAKING DOWN THE FIELD

Six schools currently ranked inside the top-25 by Golfweek will be in action at Olympic Hills Golf Club. Top-ranked Arkansas and No. 5 Southern Cal mark the two top-five teams in the field, while No. 11 South Carolina, No. 13 Furman, No. 16 Stanford and No. 18 Florida State round out the list of ranked participants. The Gamecocks (2014) and Trojans (2015, 2016) enter this weekend as the only schools to win the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. This year’s field features six first-time participants in Minnesota, Florida State, Furman, Miami, Baylor and Texas.

LAST TIME OUT

South Carolina opened its 2017-18 campaign with a sixth-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship (Sept. 15-17) after totaling an 853 (-11). Gamecock sophomore Anita Uwadia shot par or better each round en route to a top-25 showing (T22, -3), while senior standout Ainhoa Olarra (T30, -2) fired a career-best 66 (-6) on the final day at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Tennessee. Carolina led the 15-team field in par-3 scoring average (2.97) and total pars (186).

CHIP SHOTS

– South Carolina enters its 11th season under head coach Kalen Anderson, who has guided the Gamecocks to 10 tournament victories.

– Anita Uwadia’s 210 (-6) at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate last year stands as the second-lowest 54-hole total ever by a Gamecock freshman.

– Uwadia’s three rounds of par or better this fall are one shy of her total from all of last season.

South Carolina returns to action last this month when it competes at the 2017 Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The 54-hole event in Chapel Hill, N.C., which takes place Oct. 13-15, will be contested at the Finley Golf Course.
