Gamecocks Poised For Deep Run After Second Day Of Regional

Oct. 20, 2017

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis won two doubles and eight singles matches on its way to another strong day at the ITA Carolina Regional on Friday at the University of North Carolina.

After doubles tandem Carolina Dailey and Mia Horvit reached the championship match in 2016, Carolina finds itself in prime position to send another duo to the final match this year as two Carolina doubles teams reached the quarterfinals following today’s action.

South Carolina started the day victorious in doubles thanks to a Silvia Chinellato and Megan Davies 8-4 win over Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulvashchenko of Wake Forest. Hadley Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher continued the winning ways with a tightly-contested 8-6 win over Winthrop’s Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor.

In singles, Rohrabacher continued her strong play as she cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win against Appalachian State’s Maria Zacarias. Hadley Berg put the Gamecocks in the win column once more shortly after with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Nastia Rettich of Eastern Carolina. Nikolina Jovic also won her opening match in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Erica Braschi of Elon.

As the singles opening round continued, Ingrid Gamarra Martins picked up a smooth 6-0, 6-2 win over Coastal Carolina’s Sara Bondar while Horvit cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Constanza Gorches of Clemson.

In second-round action, Horvit kicked off the Gamecock victories with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Montana Moore of Elon. Jovic continued her winning ways with a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-6 (5) victory against UNC’s Chloe Ouellet Pizer. Martins closed the day with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win against Madara Straume of UNC Wilmington.

The Gamecocks return to action tomorrow for the third day of tournament action starting at 9 a.m. ET. Follow Carolina on social media (@GamecockWTennis) for tournament updates throughout the weekend.
