Gamecock Men and Women Ranked in Top 25
Dec. 6, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C. – COLUMBIA, S.C.- South Carolina swimming and diving’s men and women are both ranked in the CSCAA TYR Top 25 the organization announced Wednesday. The women checked in at No. 24 and the men landed at No. 25, marking the first time in head coach McGee Moody’s tenure that the women have been ranked above the men.
“I am proud of the work that our team has put in during this first semester,” said Moody. “We take a different approach than many teams across the country and resist the urge to rest for the mid-season invite. I believe this sets our program up to be better in February and March at the SEC and NCAA Championships. Not many teams can navigate the time between the two championship meets like our team can. To be able to remain in the top 25 in the country should give our student-athletes confidence as we move toward our championship season.”
The Gamecock women earned their spot in the rankings with a 3-3 record this fall and a fifth-place finish in the Georgia Tech Invitational. Emma Barksdale leads the women with a top-25 individual ranking at No. 15 in the 400 IM, according to CollegeSwimming.com
South Carolina’s men also went 3-3 in the fall with a fourth-place finish at the Georgia Tech Invitational to take the No. 25 spot in the rankings. The men are ranked in the top 25 in six individual events, including Fynn Minuth at No. 8 in the 500 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay team checking in at No. 25.
The Gamecocks continue competition at East Carolina on January 13, and will compete throughout the spring preparing for the SEC Championships on February 14-18 and the NCAA Championships on March 21-24 (women) and March 28-31 (men).
