Women’s Tennis at the FGCU Spring Invite

FORT MYERS, Fla. — No. 15 South Carolina women’s tennis continued to roll in the FGCU Spring Invite on Sunday, winning two of three doubles matches against Rice and six of seven singles matches against FGCU.

DOUBLES VS. RICE

After defeating Denver together on Saturday, Hadley Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher were paired up again on Sunday, defeating Fernanda Astete and Michaela Haet, 6-2. With the victory, the duo improved to 5-1 overall in 2017-18 and extended its winning streak to three matches. Silvia Chinellato and Megan Davies, who mounted a 6-2 win over Denver on Saturday, kept prospering against Anna Bowtell and Sofie Moenster. The South Carolina tandem won its doubles match, 6-2, and improved to 11-3 in overall doubles play this season. Paige Cline and Ingrid Gamarra Martins suffered an early 0-3 deficit in doubles against Wendy Zhang and Priya Niezgoda, who went on to win, 6-1. Cline and Martins are now 3-2 when paired together in overall doubles.

SINGLES VS. FGCU

Mia Horvit extended her singles winning streak to four straight matches by defeating Maja Ornberg in the first two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Horvit is now 6-3 in singles play in 2017-18. For the second day in a row at the FGCU Spring Invite, the freshmen Davies and Jovic also garnered wins in singles. Jovic defeated Patricia Villa, 7-5, 6-2, while the No. 105-ranked singles player Davies defeated Sofia Perez, 6-2, 6-3. With the victories, Jovic improved to 9-2 and Davies earned a team-high 14th win in individual singles.

After falling in singles Saturday, Cline and Rohrabacher bounced back for wins against FGCU on Sunday. Both Gamecocks defeated their opponents in the first two sets, with Cline besting Bridget Forster, 6-2, 7-6 (3), and Rohrabacher moving past Madison Gallegos, 6-0, 7-6 (2).

In an eight-game pro set, freshman Kennedy Wicker earned her first win of the 2018 spring campaign, defeating FGCU’s Laura Falceto Font, 8-0. With the win, Wicker improved to 4-3 in 2017-18. Chinellato fought hard, but suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Julia Ascua of FGCU. She is now 7-7 in overall singles play on the season.

Day three of the FGCU Spring Invite wraps up for the Gamecocks with singles against Kansas at 9 a.m. ET on Monday.

Following the FGCU Spring Invite, the Gamecocks will return to the Sunshine State for their first test in match play of the 2018 spring campaign. The team faces UCF at 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 19 at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando and USF at 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 21 at the USF Tennis Complex in Tampa.
