Gamecocks Fall To UCF In 2018 Dual Match Opener

Women’s Tennis at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – In its first dual match of the 2018 season, No. 15 South Carolina women’s tennis was defeated by the University of Central Florida, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus on Friday.

The Knights got off to a quick start by capturing the doubles point over the Gamecocks, and Silvia Bordes’ early win in singles over Silvia Chinellato. Trailing 2-0, the Gamecocks rallied off three straight singles wins to take a 3-2 team lead. The bottom of the Knights’ singles lineup answered, defeating Megan Davies and Nikolina Jovic to secure the victory.

DOUBLES

The Gamecocks were unable to capture the doubles point, losing two of three doubles matches against the Knights. Hadley Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher won their doubles match against Silvia Bordes and Rebeka Stolmar, 6-3. UCF’s Monica Matias and Natalia Serrano defeated the doubles tandem of Silvia Chinellato and Megan Davies, 6-3. Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins battled back and forth with Maria Martinez and Ksemia Kuznetsova, who ultimately won the match, 7-5, and secured the doubles point for the Knights.

SINGLES

The Gamecocks went 3-0 at the top of the lineup, with Hadley Berg, Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins securing wins in their singles matches. The No. 43-ranked Berg made quick work of her opponent, Maria Martinez, defeating the freshman in two straight sets. Similar to Berg, Horvit and Gamarra Martins won their matches in two sets against Ksenia Jutnetsova and Monica Matias, respectively. While Megan Davies won her first singles set, 6-1, Rebeka Stolmar rallied back and won two straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, to win the match. UCF’s Silvia Bordes defeated Silvia Chinellato in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, and Natalia Serrano of the Knights came away with a win after a tough back-and-forth battle with Nikolina Jovic.
