Indoor Meet #2 – Track & Field at the Clemson Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of South Carolina track & field team posted another strong day of work Saturday on the second day of the Clemson Invitational. Ncincilili Titi led the way, running the fastest 200m time in the NCAA this season.
Titi’s victory in the 200 was the top achievement on a day that included four podium finishes for the Gamecocks. Otis Jones (800m), Tye Williams (high jump) and Armand Woodley (pole vault) also finished in the top-three Saturday, giving Carolina eight podiums for the weekend.
Carolina’s first podium of the day came in the 800m, where Otis Jones ran 1:50.69 in his season-opener to finish third. The two-time NCAA qualifier was just .33 seconds off the pace Saturday and less than a second off his indoor PR. His time is 13th-best in NCAA Division I this season.
The track at Clemson has been favorable to Titi in the past, as he ran his previous top 200m time of 20.67 at Clemson last season and he set a new 60m PR last night, 6.69. He found another gear once again Saturday, blowing away the field with a 200m sprint of 20.45. That’s the second-best indoor effort in Gamecock history and the top time in the NCAA so far this season.
Woodley achieved another indoor PR Saturday in the pole vault, going over five meters indoors for the first time by clearing 16-4 ¾. The 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier has set a new indoor top mark in each of the first two meets this season.
One week after clearing 2.20m and setting a new Gamecock record, Williams hit 2.15m (7-0 ½) to finish second in Clemson. The senior was ranked seventh nationally heading into this weekend’s competition.
NOTABLE
• Simon Gyllensten completed his first pentathlon of the season, finishing fourth with 4,379 points. The senior won the 1000m run with a time of 2:40.77.
• Hanifah Abdulqadir finished fifth in the triple jump but achieved a new PR. Her mark of 42-9 ¾ is a quarter-inch better than last week and the fourth-best mark in Carolina history.
FROM THE COACH
“Titi’s run was a fantastic highlight. He just had a great run. I thought he would break his PR, but I didn’t know he would be this fast. He set it up last night, so we knew he was going to have a big one. He’s got to continue to do what he’s doing; training is very important for him.”
“Otis had a good day, and so did Tye. Hanifah improved again in the triple jump, and each of those athletes has something to build off of. The same goes for Armand in the pole vault. I’m also happy with our distance runners and our hurdlers; everyone is getting better. The big thing for our entire team is to appreciate this meet and to continue to identify kids that will contribute for us in the postseason. All of the pieces are coming together.”– Head Coach Curtis Frye
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
South Carolina heads to the Big Apple next week for the newly-renamed Columbia Challenge. Another nationally-ranked field awaits the Gamecocks at The Armory, with the event running Jan. 26-27.
