Three Gamecock Podiums on day one of CSCAA National Invitational
ANNAPOLIS, Md.- University of South Carolina posted three total podium finishes including a first-place finish from Allen Ross in the men’s 50 yard freestyle on the first day of the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational on Thursday at the United States Naval Academy.
In addition to Ross’s first-place finish, the Gamecocks’ picked up a pair of second place finishes to help South Carolina finish the day in fifth place in both the men’s and women’s overall standings. The day one men’s standings included team points that had been accumulated in the NCAA Zone Diving Championships while the women’s zone diving scores have yet to be incorporated into the team rankings.
DAY 1 RECAP
Ross qualified first in the men’s 50 free with a time of 20.40 in prelims and took the top spot in the event with a finals time of 20.36. Justin Rose took ninth place and topped the men’s B final in the 50 free with a finals time of 20.66.
Christina Lappin set a meet record in prelims of the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.39, finishing the event in second place with a finals time of 22.63.
Jackson Smith took second-place in the men’s 200-yard IM with a finals time of 1:47.08. Tamas Novoszath finished in fifth in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:25.78.
The Gamecocks also picked up a pair of top-five relay finishes with a fourth-place finish in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay and a fifth place finish in the men’s 400-yard medly relay.

The Gamecocks will continue to compete in the CSCAA National Invite tomorrow with seven more events on the docket on day two of the three-day meet. Preliminary events are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. with finals scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
