Gamecocks Finish with Three Meet Records at CSCAA National Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
University of South Carolina swimming set another pair of meet records over the final two days of the CSCAA National Invitational with Christina Lappin’s 53.18 in the women’s 100 fly and Will Riggs’s 1:44.91 in the men’s 200 fly. Lappin and Riggs both finished atop the podium of each respective event to contribute to the Gamecocks’ seven total first-place finishes over the three-day meet.
South Carolina’s men’s team finished with 11 total podium finishes over the three days, finishing in third place in the overall team standings with 428 total points. The Gamecocks’ women’s team finished with five podium finishes in addition to Julia Vincent’s pair of first-place finishes in the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships to help South Carolina to a fourth-place finish in the overall team standings.
DAY 2 RECAP
The second day of finals began and ended with second-place relay finishes for the Gamecocks as the women’s 200 medley team swam a 1:40.49 to begin the night session while the men’s 800 freestyle relay team capped off the night with a 6:34.73 finals time to make it onto the podium.
Lappin set her second meet record of the week to finish in first-place in the women’s 100 butterfly, while Jackson Smith picked up a second South Carolina first-place finish on the night with a 3:49.59 in the finals of the men’s 400 individual medley.
Bryce Kananowicz found the podium on Friday night as well with a 48.50 in the finals of the men’s 100 backstroke to finish in third.
The Gamecocks also picked up a pair of top-five relay finishes with a fourth-place finish in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay and a fifth place finish in the men’s 400-yard medly relay.
DAY 3 RECAP
Tamas Novoszath captured the first South Carolina podium finish on the final day of competition with a 15.13.09 time in the men’s 1650 freestyle to finish in second-place.
Bryce Kananowicz captured his second podium finish of the meet with a second-place finish in the men’s 200 backstroke while teammate, Kevin Liu came in less than a second behind to finish in third.
Lappin continued her strong showing on the final day of competition with a third-place finish in the women’s 100 free.
Allen Ross topped the podium for the second time in the meet with a 44.45, first-place finish in the men’s 100 free.
Marissa DelGado later posted another Gamecocks’ first-place finish with a 1:57.25 finals time in the women’s 200 fly which was followed by a first-place finish from Will Riggs in the men’s 200 fly.
UP NEXT FOR CAROLINA
South Carolina swimming will have a week off from competition before sending eight student-athletes to the women’s NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Mar. 21-24, followed by a trip for 10 student-athletes to the men’s NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., on Mar. 28-31.
