PALM CITY, Fla. — South Carolina wrapped up play at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, finishing 13th at 29-over. The Gamecocks were led by 2017 All-American Keenan Huskey, who shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish the tournament T-9th.

The Greenville, S.C., native’s under par round matched his 70 in the second round at Floridian National Golf Club on Monday. Huskey tallied just four bogeys on his scorecard over his final 36 holes of the tournament.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler finished up a solid tournament with a 75 (+4) in today’s final round. The Abingdon, Vs., native, had three birdies and finished T-49th in the individual standings.

Junior Scott Stevens also carded a 4-over 75 on Sunday to finish T-69th at 14-over par. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, finished strong with an eagle on his final hole – the par-5 13 – and was one of 26 players in the 90-man field to record in eagle in the tournament. Junior Will Miles carded a 76 (+5) in the final round to finish T-72nd. Senior Ben Dietrich shot 81 (+10) on Tuesday and finished 82nd.

No. 1 Oklahoma State, the wire-to-wire leader, won the team title by five shots over No. 23 Florida State. The Cowboys shot 289 (+5) in the final round and finished the tournament at 12-under as a team. The Seminoles and No. 3 Georgia Tech were the only teams in the field to shoot under par as a team in Tuesday’s third round. Viktor Hovland of Oklahoma State, the fifth-ranked player in the country and the 36-hole leader, earned medalist honors at 13-under. Hovland shot 67, 65, 68 en route to first-place. John Pak of Florida State was the runner-up medalist at 9-under.

Huskey’s 70 in the final round marks his 15th round of par or better during the 2017-18 season, which leads the team. He’s been on a tear in the spring with seven of his nine rounds at par or better. He’s been able to lower his scoring average, which is now a team-best 70.88, in every event since the Carpet Capital Collegiate to begin the season. Huskey finished this week’s event with 10 birdies and 36 pars. Over his final 36 holes, the senior team captain posted just four bogeys.

NOTABLE

  • Keenan Huskey notched his 15th career top-10 finish this week, which moves him into sole possession of eighth place all-time at South Carolina.
  • Huskey was one of only four players in the entire field to have a par or better scoring average on the par-3s, 4s and 5s.
  • For the first time in his four starts this season, freshman Andrew Spiegler‘s score counted every time in the lineup this week for the Gamecocks.
  • Junior Will Miles led the team with 12 birdies this week, which T-15th in the field.
  • This was the best field Carolina has seen in a tournament this season with 13 of the 16 teams ranked in the top-40 of the latest Golfstat rankings – including the top three teams in the country: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 3 Georgia Tech.

UP NEXT

Carolina will look to defend its title at the 2018 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 25-27). The Gamecocks have won the event the past three seasons. Carolina shot an 844 (-2) and was paced by Keenan Huskey and Jamie Wilson, who both had top-five finishes.
