Men’s Golf at Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate

AWENDAW, S.C. — South Carolina shot even par (288) in the opening round of the 2018 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks were led by under par rounds from senior Keenan Huskey (-3) and junior Scott Stevens (-1).

Huskey tallied a field-best eight birdies en route to his 69, which has him T-4th individually. The Greenville, S.C., native, shot even par over his first nine holes and 3-under on the back nine. Huskey is T-4th heading into round two.

Stevens, who is T-21st, was steady and consistent carding just one bogey in the first round Sunday. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, was 1-over through five holes and shot 2-under the rest of the way with a pair of birdies.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler continued his steady play from the Valspar Collegiate Invitational with an even par 72 today. The Abingdon, Va., native, had four birdies which ranked second on the team in the first round. Speigler is T-34th in the individual standings. Junior Will Miles and sophomore Jamie Wilson each carded 76s and are T-60th.

Missouri shot 10-under (278) in the opening round and has a three shot lead over Kentucky, Iowa State, Kent State and Ole Miss, who all shot 281 (-7) on Sunday. Matt Echelmeier of Missouri has the individual lead at 5-under after shooting 67. 33 players in the 75-man field are within four shots of him.

ROUND CHANGER Keenan Huskey

Huskey was lights out down the stretch today during his round of 69, shooting 3-under on the back nine with five birdies. It marks his eighth round in the 60s during the 2017-18, tying him with Scott Stevens for the team-lead. Huskey now leads Carolina with 16 rounds of par or better this season. The Greenville, S.C., native has played well at Bulls Bay over the past two seasons, winning the tournament as a sophomore in 2015 and taking third last season. He’s well on his way to another top-five finish at the event.

NOTABLE

  • Keenan Huskey led the field with eight birdies in Sunday’s opening round. He also tied for the field lead in par-3 scoring average (2.60, -2) and is T-2nd in par-4 scoring average (3.75, -2).
  • Scott Stevens had just one bogey in 18 holes. Today marked Stevens’ 50th career round of par or better.
  • Andrew Spiegler shot par or better for the first time in competition since the final round of the All-American Intercollegiate (Feb. 18).
  • The Gamecocks have recorded 11 consecutive rounds of par or better as a team at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate dating back to a final round 276 during the 2014 season.
  • South Carolina had 19 birdies in the opening round, ranking fourth in the field.
