Outdoor Meet #6 ââ’¬” Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of South Carolina track & field team was in action Saturday to complete the weekend at the Tennessee Relays. After a big Friday night at Tom Black Track, the Gamecocks closed the meet with more solid efforts Saturday.

The vast majority of the weekend’s action was Friday, when South Carolina truly shined. Aliyah Abrams (400m), Josh Awotunde (shot put), Shelby Freedman (javelin), Yann Randrianasolo (long jump), Ncincilili Titi (200m) and Armand Woodley (pole vault) accounted for event wins on Friday.

2017 All-American Tye Williams made his outdoor season debut in the high jump and finished sixth on Saturday. Williams cleared 6-9 ½ in his first competition since February’s SEC Indoor Championships.

All of Saturday’s track action came in relay events, with the Gamecocks getting good work in as the postseason approaches. The women’s 4x200m relay opened the afternoon with a third-place finish. Amecia Pennamon, Aliyah Abrams, Stephanie Davis and Tatyana Mills turned in a time of 1:35.14. The Carolina women also finished fifth in the 4x100m and seventh in the sprint medley relay.

FROM THE COACH

“It was good to see Tye get his outdoor season going today. Jumping 6-9 on his first go is a good effort, and we’re looking to get him over seven feet as he competes this week at home. We didn’t have a ton of student-athletes in action today, but yesterday was a great day for our program with six wins. We’re healthy going into the stretch run, and people are starting to peak at the right time. We’re excited to honor our seniors next week. They’ve given us a great four years. Our staff is proud to recognize them at our home facility and grateful of the way that they have helped build our program over the last four years.” – Head Coach Curtis Frye
